Buteyko

THE BUTEYKO BREATHING PROGRAMME, shows you how to control your asthma safely and successfully without any side effects. It is based on the life's work of Russian respiratory physiologist , Professor Konstantin Buteyko. Trials held at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, Australia showed patients using the Buteyko method for 3 months had 70% less symptoms, 90% less need for reliever medication, 49% less need for steroids. Trials held at Gisborne Hospital, New Zealand showed after 6 months the Buteyko group had a 85% reduced need for reliever medication and a 50% reduced rate for inhaled steroids.

I decided to train as a Buteyko breathing teacher with the Buteyko Breathing Association after my wife unexpectedly developed asthma and followed a Buteyko breathing programme as a therapy. As result she found it no longer necessary to take any relievers or steroids.

The Buteyko Technique is a breathing retraining programme, guiding the patient through various stages. The majority of people will show a significant improvement within a couple of weeks. The retraining discusses various asthma and irritant triggers and how to deal with them.

The basic programme is a short course of only 3/4 training sessions over a 3 week period, this may be extended further if requested. Some people like to come back for a 'refresher' session at a later date. The children's programme is especially adapted to their needs and understanding. The young child or teenager, accompanied always by an adult, obtains the most beneficial results because of the parental support.

Buteyko works entirely within B.T.S./S.I.G.N. guidelines. Any decisions relating to stepping down medications because of improvement are referred back to the patient's G.P.
